Masks are a great option to use outdoors. Certified N95 and N99 pollution masks reduce exposure to particulate matter very well, and are incredibly easy to use.
There are several options, but we have listed some of our favorites here:
Vogmasks are high quality, trendy, and very effective—a great mix of form and function. The masks are reusable, come in different ranges and have various certifications (more info on those here).
Vogmask has a range of products, and all its current masks are N99 rated (they filter out 99% of particles small up to 0.3 microns), although they are made of different materials on the outside. The main particle filter, sandwiched between the layers, is the same in all masks, and there are usually either one or two exhalation valves.
The life of a Vogmask depends on frequency of use. If used frequently in times of high air pollution (when it should be), the filter becomes saturated quicker. This can be around 3-4 months, or less/more depending on air quality (they extend to 3 years). There is a sudden change in breathing resistance when this happens, indicating time for a new mask.
S = 9 cm, M = 10 cm, and L = 12 cm.
Entry level models start at Rs. 1,800-2,000, except that more expensive collaborations highlight art and post modernity.
If you dislike wearing pollution masks outdoors, Nasofilters are an excellent alternative. Nasofilters are small respiratory filters that stick to your nose, and prevent small pollution particles from entering the lungs when you breathe. Nasofilters are the first of it’s kind to remove 95% of PM2.5 pollution. It was developed by a team from IIT-Delhi, with breakthrough nano-fibre based technology.
Use: A Nasofilter is a one time use product, completely made up of biodegradable material. These nasal filters prevent the entry of particulate matter through a person's nasal orifice, with an efficiency of preventing 95% of PM2.5 particles from entering (similar to the effectiveness of an N95 pollution mask).
3M Pollution Mask
3M masks are simple, disposable, and low-cost.
3M has a range of masks, several of them are N95 (they filter out 95% of particles small up to 0.3 microns), but they also have masks with higher effectiveness. Some 3M masks come with valves to provide cool air to reduce discomfort.
The life of a 3M Mask depends on frequency of use. If used frequently in times of high air pollution (when it should be), the filter becomes saturated quicker. We recommend replacing your 3M Masks after a few weeks of usage.
